Taking a trip with your nearest and dearest is meant to be a time of relaxation, fun, memory making, and yes – enjoying some delicious food! In fact, dining is usually a major highlight when Jeff and I take a little time away.
So how in the world can you experience those culinary delights yet ensure your jeans will still fit once you get home? Here are some ways to make that happen….
1. Plan Active Time – Do some research and see what’s available when it comes to activities that don’t involve just sitting. After all, you did plenty of that in the car or plane ride over, right? Here are some activities to look for:
- Bike Rentals – Cruising on a bike is a much better way to explore a city as opposed to driving anyway!
- Kayaking – My family did this in Lake Tahoe one summer when my brothers and I were teenagers and it was SO fun!
- Surf Lessons – I took surf lessons on a family vacation when I was ten years old and it was awesome. Just be sure to use a big surfboard your first time out – the bigger the board the easier it is to surf!
- Horse Back Riding – Although this does involve sitting, riding a horse challenges the core muscles in a big way.
- Hiking – This is definitely one of my favorite activities while traveling! Especially since most of my workouts at home are indoors, so this is a nice way to get out in nature and do some exploring, too!
2. Ignore the “Three Squares” Idea – Eating all three major meals, breakfast, lunch and dinner, is a typical routine for daily life, but if you went a little nuts at the breakfast buffet, then having a light lunch may make sense. Just listen to your hunger cues and know that it’s ok to skip a meal if you’re still full from the last one. Another option is to just eat a small snack instead of a meal.
Which brings me to the next tip:
3. Pack Snacks! – Nuts, low sugar vegan protein bars, whole pieces of fruit that are easy to eat anywhere anytime, single serving packets of nut butters, ready made popcorn, and seaweed snacks – these are all things that I pack for every single trip Jeff and I take. Keep them close by while on a plane or in the car, especially!
4. Walk Everywhere – This is a big one! Walking is a great way to burn calories and keep your blood circulating. So if you have the choice to drive or walk, walk as often as possible. I’ve actually heard many people say that doing this allowed them to lose weight while on their vacations.
5. Keep in Mind Liquid Calories – I’m talking about alcohol, including sweet cocktails, plus lemonades, sodas, and sweet coffee drinks. The sugar content in these drinks adds up quickly, so if specialty cocktails are a priority while on vacation, consider skipping desserts or keep the portions small.
As a side note: Jeff and I noticed a few years back that if we indulged in a dinner that included all three of the following: alcohol of any kind, fatty savory foods and dessert, we would not only feel awful and low energy the next day, but our clothes wouldn’t fit as comfortably either. So now when we go out for a special meal, we usually try and omit one of those three “food groups” and most of the time it’s the alcohol that we skip. It’s amazing what a difference it makes in how we feel afterwards!
