Have you ever pulled into your driveway after a long day at work only to realize that you have a car loaded with stuff, including some trash that you feel too exhausted to take inside?
Or how ‘bout this: Have you ever cooked a meal, big or small, and are left with zero desire to wash the dishes once the meal is done?
One more – Have you ever been too tired to hang your coat up after you walk in the front door? I mean after all, there’s a chair right there that you can drape it over until you feel like putting it away!
I think it’s safe to assume that all of us have identified with one or all of the scenarios above at some point or another. So I’d like to share a phrase that I tell myself whenever I feel the urge to put something off:
It only takes a second.
That’s it. That’s the magical phrase that has changed my life. Because of this phrase, my car and kitchen usually look pretty tidy and rarely are there miscellaneous clothes piled or draped on furniture.
It’s like doing mini favors for yourself on a regular basis. Never underestimate the power of living and working in a clean, clutter-free and organized environment. Life feels so much easier and happier when you’re surroundings are pleasant. And although we all know that it takes longer than just one second to do most things, it still doesn’t take very long in the grand scheme of things. Saying to yourself “it only takes a second” just makes it feel like less of a hassle.
Other times I repeat this phrase to myself are when I need to:
- Pack snacks or lunch to take with me before I leave the house for the day
- Clean up a pile of papers
- Write a thank you note
- Throw a big batch of chopped vegetables into the oven so that we have roasted vegetables on hand for a few days.
- Make the bed
- Re-hang outfit rejects in my closet after I’ve decided not to wear them.
But the list goes on…
I hope this simple phrase helps you as much as it has helped me!
