The Very Best Exercise There Is

One question I hear on regular basis is, “What’s the best type of exercise I can be doing?” Over the years, my answer to this has changed.

I used to start off by explaining which form of cardio I thought was the most effective, and then launch into all of the great benefits of weight lifting and why everyone should be doing it. But it occurred to me much later that some people hate doing cardio on machines and/or lifting weights. And people aren’t likely to do things that they hate…well, not on a consistent basis, any way.

At this point, however, after working with a wide variety of clients who have very different schedules and workout preferences, I’ve realized that exercise is not a one-size-fits-all type of thing. What is most important is that we get our bodies moving, our blood circulating and our heart rates elevated – preferably for an extended period of time. Research has shown exercise helps us to fight off disease and live longer.

So whether it’s swimming, walking, dancing, running, yoga, Pilates, weight lifting, using cardio machines, sports, practicing martial arts, riding a bike, (etc., etc.), my answer now is: The best type of exercise you could be doing is the type you enjoy doing. If you enjoy doing something, you’re more likely to do it on a consistent basis. It’s as simple as that.
