Homemade Garlic Hummus

This is my easy, go-to recipe for fresh homemade hummus that can be made in ten minutes or less!
Prep Time10 minutes
Total Time10 minutes
Course: Side Dish
Cuisine: gluten-free, plant based, vegan
Keyword: Homemade Garlic Hummus
Servings: 2 cups (about)

Ingredients

  • 3 Tbsp. liquid from can of garbanzo beans (45 ml)
  • 15 oz. can garbanzo beans
  • 1/4 c. tahini
  • 2 Tbsp. lemon juice (30 ml)
  • 1 tsp. cumin
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 2 tsp. minced garlic about 1 large clove OR 1 tsp. garlic powder
  • ½ tsp. sugar
  • Optional Toppings: a light drizzle of olive oil za’atar or paprika

Instructions

  • First, draw 3 Tb. of the liquid from a can of garbanzo beans and add it to your food processor or high powdered blender. Then, drain the rest of the liquid off, rinse your beans, and add them as well.
  • Add the remaining 6 ingredients to a food processor or high powered blender in the order they are listed and blend for one minute.
  • Next, scrape the sides of the bowl, add 1-2 tablespoons of water if needed, and blend again for two minutes.
  • That’s all there is to it! Spoon out your fresh hummus into a storage container and place in the fridge until ready to eat.

Notes

  • For a "less thick" hummus, add 1 - 2 teaspoons of water, extra virgin olive oil, avocado oil, or cold-pressed flax oil to the mix.
  • If you want to make your hummus super special, just before serving, top it with a light drizzle of olive oil or avocado oil, and a good sprinkling of either za’atar or paprika. Za’atar is a Middle Eastern spice that goes scrumptiously with hummus. I picked up some in Israel while on Jeff’s world tour a few years ago, and we savored every spec until it was gone! Rumor has it, that you can find za’atar at Trader Joe’s.
  • This hummus can store in the fridge for about two weeks.
